5 TIPS TO GET YOU MOTIVATED TO START WORKING OUT

Estimated reading time: 3 minute(s)

“I’m so tired”, “I’ll start tomorrow”, “the weather’s bad”, “I’ve got too much work”…  Sometimes these may be true, but when this is your response out of sheer habit, then it’s a sign that you probably lack motivation. Almost everyone likes or wants to be in good shape because it is a sign of taking care of yourself and that you’re in good health. However, not everyone finds the motivation that drives them to get off the couch and lead an active lifestyle.

Remember Why You Started

Remembering that you’re doing this to achieve the goals that you’ve wanted for so long is the greatest motivation there is. Whatever made you start exercising one day, never lose sight of it. From wanting to improve your outward appearance to the need to burn off some excess food you ate, or just as a de-stressor and an excuse to leave the house, turn whatever it is into your greatest source of inspiration.

Thinking hard about what you want, will make you leave the house or get out of your chair even on the laziest of days. It will also make you work out harder and longer. In his book What I Talk About When I Talk About Running Haruki Murakami confirms that what truly makes a difference is that impulse that pushes you to take one more stride, even when you feel like you can’t take it anymore. The longest-lasting sources of motivation over time are your own determination, self-discipline, and desire to excel.

Have You Heard Of The 5 Second Rule?

Think about how much time passes by between when the alarm clock goes off to when you actually get out of bed. For some, it may just be a few seconds, for others a few minutes, and for many, they’ll be cursing at the alarm trying to push the snooze button. According to the well-known American coach Mel Robbins, the first few seconds before making a decision are crucial. Because of that, we have to train our brains to respond using the 5-second rule. This rule will help you make decisions quickly without making up excuses or getting carried away by circumstance. Many of her followers say that thanks to incorporating her philosophy they’ve been able to add in physical activity to their daily routines.

Motivating Mini Challenges

When you start working out regularly, you run the risk of repeating the same routine over and over. This often happens for people who go to the gym and constantly use the same machines and don’t adjust the intensity levels or the time they spend on it. The same thing can happen with outdoor sports. This is more important than you might think, as not having new goals can easily become discouraging.

Both by losing the desire to be physically active, and because you might stop seeing the physical results of your hard work. We have to strive to keep improving ourselves. If you’ve created a workout routine or follow a specific program, be sure to switch up the numbers of repetitions or the length of time you are doing a set. Don’t forget to always look for new exercises that will continue to increase your endurance levels and strength of your muscles. The more you practice, the better you’ll get and consequently, you’ll want to do more.

Your Favorite Playlist

Many people get bored when working out alone whether it be outdoors or at the gym. Almost all of us love music though. So it’s a good idea to make your own playlist to help you disconnect while you’re exercising, trust me the time will go by much faster. You may even want to work out a bit longer so you can finish a particular song or album.

Make sure you update your playlist often, so you don’t get bored listening to the same thing over and over. It’s also a good idea to have a variety of songs to choose from so you can find what suits your mood on a particular day. Don’t forget about podcasts, there are a lot of options to choose from, both on traditional radio platforms and specific apps dedicated to podcasts. A great option is to choose a podcast series, one that will get you hooked and be more fun than listening to traditional audios. You’ll even enjoy practicing other languages more.

A Positive Spiral: Make Life Special Every Day

Once you choose an activity that best suits you, you’ll enjoy the time you spend exercising either alone or with friends and seeing the fruits of your labor. Not only your body but also your mind need physical exercises to feel good. It doesn’t have to be all about enjoying the workout itself, it can be enjoying the outfit you wear, the friends you go on a run with or to a class with, or the dinner plans that you make afterward. It’s important to associate positive things you like with the time you spend working out.

Planning out your meals is one of the things that works most. You’ll want to eat something appetizing and healthy after you finish your workout, so you can associate sports and food together. You’ll be looking forward to getting home and making that dish or snack that you love so much and that you more than deserve. Surely, thinking about that delicious meal will help you to run that extra 10 minutes.
